The premierships, over Blackheath in the Third Grade and Faulconbridge in the Fourth Grade, were the clubs first since forming in 2003. Katoomba Third Grade collected the Birrell Cup at Katoomba Falls Reserve off the back of a sparkling 135 by Brian Keightley - a record top score for the club. Keightley's innings set up a useful total of 240, which defending premiers Blackheath struggled to overhaul, being all out for 67. Premiership winning captain Paul Cooper praised all his side's effort in the field. "They were all good," said Cooper. "I couldn't split a hair between them." The Katoomba Cricket Club Third Grade win came after a fine season for the club's senior team, which saw Katoomba finish minor premiers, another first for the young club. In the Fourth Grade Katoomba Warrigals went into the Grand Final at Gloria Park Hazelbrook as rank outsiders following a remarkable winning streak and having the luck of other results go their way. These results saw them sneak into third spot ahead of a plucky Hazelbrook side. The team faced the semi final against Wentworth Falls with just nine players, but prevailed after a fine partnership between Glen McVey and Sean Cooke with the bat. Coming up against a strong Faulconbridge side the Kerry Cooke captained Warrigals lifted for the occasion with the bowlers bouncing back after Faulconbridge reached 2 for 97. Gavin Lane's 2 for 15 bowled Katoomba back into contention, restricting Faulconbridge to 157. A tough spell before stumps on the first day had the Warrigals reeling at 2 for 3. The weather brightened on the Sunday and so did Katoomba's chances when Glen McVey and Chris Cornell dug in for a stand of 93 for the fourth wicket. All that remained was for teenage cricketing prodigy Pat Cooke to score the winning runs off the back of some big hitting and the Katoomba Warrigals had achieved a fairytale premiership. "It really is wonderful for cricket in Katoomba," said club secretary Phil Doyle at the celebrations after the win. "This is a proud club that has struggled through six long seasons and some tough times, but now we are growing and have two premierships to show for our efforts. "Next year we will be looking to field teams in all senior grades and continue to grow our juniors with an under 12s side. "The redevelopment at Melrose looks set to go ahead and for all this we have our players, supporters, sponsors, Blackburn's Family Hotel and the community of Katoomba to thank."
